Mock Newbery Book Club and Legendary Leaders

The Newbery Medal is one of the most prestigious children's book awards. It is awarded each year by the American Library Association "to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children" (ALA). A group of librarians, teachers and writers are a part of the Newbery Committee, which meets regularly and picks the award winner every Winter.
Fairfield's Newbery Club has undergone some changes! This year, students will help make up Fairfield's Mock Newbery Committee. Students that join will evaluate and debate award-worthy children's literature and then use critical thinking and reading skills to select their choice for the year's best written book. Students must read 5 books (on their own) from the MNBC list, and then meet (5-8 times throughout the year) with Mrs. K to discuss their readings. We will play a fun game of Jeopardy to review each book on selected dates. Students will have an ample amount of time to complete each book, but must finish all books to meet the requirements of the club. Students will then vote on their favorite book to receive the Fairfield Mock Newbery Medal. Which book will the students pick this year? Join us and find out!
Our Goals:
- To read at least 5 Mock Newbery titles during the school year.
- To discuss our reading after we've finished each book
- To select a Mock Newbery Award winner and honor titles for next year's club
- To build community while growing readers
*Want to talk about some of the year's best children's books? Then sign up for the Mock Newbery Book Club in the library today! Because of the requirements, the Mock Newbery Book Club is only for interested 3rd and 4th graders.
Legendary Leaders
All members of the Fairfield Elementary Student Council will be recommended into office by their 3rd grade teacher. However, if you are new to Fairfield and would like to join, please speak to Mrs. K in the Media Center about your interest in becoming a member of our Legendary Leaders program.
